Welt Sf std. (8. Jh.), mhd. welt, wer(e)lt, ahd. weralt, andfrk. werold Stammwort. Aus wg. * wira-aldō f. "Zeitalter, Welt", auch in ae. weorold, afr. warld. Zusammensetzung aus g. * wera- "Mann, Mensch" in gt. wair, anord. verr m., ae. wer, as. wer, ahd. wer m.; außergermanisch air. fer m., l. vir m. und gedehnt ai. vīrá- m., lit. výras und als zweitem Glied ein Wort für Alter, das zu alt gehört. Das Benennungsmotiv im einzelnen ist unklar; doch handelt es sich im Gegensatz zu dem Bezeichnungstyp Midgard "Welt" zunächst um eine Bezeichnung für die Bevölkerung, nicht eine lokale Größe. Adjektiv: weltlich.
